Three years ago, the lab wasn’t yet the structured venture-development asset it is today. It was a space with tools, potential, and a belief that founders on the Space Coast shouldn’t have to leave the region to build serious products.

Since then, the Prototype Lab has evolved into a hands-on engine for early-stage innovation, guiding founders from first sketches to functional MVPs and, ultimately, shelf-ready products, spanning conceptualization and design, rapid prototyping and small-batch production, and, increasingly, electronic development and integrated product systems.

But the real story isn’t just about equipment. It’s about de-risking innovation.

Hardware and physical product startups often face steep barriers: tooling costs, manufacturing minimums, iteration delays, and fragmented vendor relationships. The Prototype Lab was intentionally shaped to reduce that friction, allowing founders to test locally, iterate quickly, validate assumptions, and move into commercialization with more confidence and less waste.

Over the past three years, the lab has:

• Supported more than 100 founders and product teams

• Enabled rapid MVP development and design-for-manufacturing refinement

• Expanded into electronic development capabilities

• Strengthened collaboration between engineers, designers, and operators

• Helped companies prepare for fundraising, competitions, demos, go-to-market execution, and scalable production

What began as fabrication support has increasingly become venture development infrastructure, where product strategy, manufacturability, and commercialization thinking intersect early in the build process.

Beyond direct founder support, the Prototype Lab has played an active role in strengthening the broader innovation ecosystem. The lab has supported regional diversification efforts, including the Space Coast Initiative, helped foster workforce development through the Industry Amplified Intern Program, hosting more than 25 interns to date in collaboration with Florida Tech, Easter Florida State College, University of Central Florida and the University of Florida, and cultivated strategic partnerships at the state, national, and global levels to meet increasingly complex startup and product development needs.

These collaborations ensure that founders here gain access not only to advanced tools and technical guidance but also to talent pipelines, cross-sector networks, and scalable pathways that extend far beyond the lab walls.

The shift, from idea to tangible proof, often marks the turning point for a startup. It strengthens investor conversations. It clarifies product-market fit. It accelerates decision-making.

And it reinforces a larger belief: world-class product development can happen here.

Three years in, the Prototype Lab continues to grow alongside the ecosystem, adapting, refining processes, and expanding capabilities to meet the evolving needs of founders building in hardware, electronics, and beyond.
