From Late-Night Searches to a Care Platform: Junko Gardenour's BrightPath
How a Groundswell founder turned her hardest questions as a parent into a care platform designed to support thousands of families navigating autism and disability care.
At 2 AM, while her kids slept, Junko Gardenour was searching for answers Google and Apple never taught her to find.
![]() | Before BrightPath, Junko spent over a decade at these two high-tech companies, building products used by millions of people. But her most personal project started at home, in the quiet hours after her children went to bed, searching for answers about her two kids' autism diagnoses. "Families were not failing the system," she says, "the system was failing families." |
That realization became BrightPath, an AI-powered management and navigation platform built to help families cut through the maze of therapies, schools, and services with greater continuity of care, while giving support organizations and service providers greater visibility into each family's care journey, emerging needs, progress, and the tools and insights to support more families at scale..
Junko was referred to Groundswell through weVENTURE at Florida Tech, and she wasn't sure what to expect. What she found surprised her. "Rather than giving me a standard set of resources, they took the time to understand my project, where we were as a company, and what I needed at that particular stage," she says. "What I expected to be another entrepreneurial resource has turned into a community of people who are genuinely invested in helping BrightPath succeed."
That community became her team. "One of the most meaningful ways Groundswell has helped BrightPath is that I found members of my founding team through the Groundswell community," Junko says. Her Head of Engineering and Head of Commercial both came through Groundswell connections, along with mentors, marketing and PR support, and introductions to investors.

Her advice to other founders starting out, especially those without a technical background: "Don't wait for a co-founder or a technical team before you start building. There are many AI and no-code tools available today that can help you turn an idea into a proof of concept without a technical background. You don't need to have everything figured out before you start. Build what you can with the resources you have, put it in front of real users as early as possible, learn, and let each stage tell you what you need next."
Building a company from scratch hasn't been a straight line. "I've learned to become more comfortable with uncertainty and to see setbacks less as failures and more as information," she says. That mindset shows in how she talks about success, too: "I feel like I've already succeeded. Through BrightPath, I've been able to turn some of the most difficult experiences in my own life into something meaningful. I've met amazing people, built relationships I never would have had otherwise, and discovered a sense of purpose that I didn't expect when I started. There has already been so much value in the journey itself. In that sense, I feel like I'm already winning."
BrightPath was recently selected to present at the Florida Early Stage Venture Conference, a milestone Junko sees as an inflection point in the company's journey, from proving the problem to proving BrightPath can scale. The team is now working toward its first B2B pilots with organizations that could bring BrightPath to many more families.

One message sums up why she keeps going. A parent preparing for her child's first IEP meeting used BrightPath's AI Chat and personalized Roadmap to get organized. Afterward, she wrote to Junko that BrightPath was "truly the greatest support tool I have used," adding, "it's such a breath of fresh air to chat there."
"If BrightPath can create that feeling for thousands of families," Junko says, "that's the impact I want our team to have."
