The KationX Path: Serendipity to Scaling

Some companies begin with a business plan. KationX began at a barbecue.

That curiosity led him to design a new flocculant, test it across multiple facilities, including in the middle of a Wyoming winter, and ultimately spark what would become KationX.

Bill’s journey hasn’t followed a quick-growth trajectory. The pandemic locked down facilities, slowed adoption, and shrank his team significantly. Industrial technology moves on an eight-to-twelve-year adoption cycle, a pace Bill describes simply: “It’s taken longer. It’s taken a lot longer.” But despite the setbacks, he stayed committed because the product continued to prove itself. “When you know it works, it’s like, wow,” he said. That consistency became the fuel that kept him moving forward.

A major shift came when Bill discovered Groundswell. After spending more than $4,000 per month on traditional office overhead, transitioning into Groundswell provided immediate relief and clarity. “I came here, and I got the whole enchilada,” he explained. The space allowed him to streamline operations, outsource manufacturing, rebuild lean, and stay focused on revenue rather than overhead.

Today, KationX is entering a new chapter. Bill is building a nationwide outside-sales network and leveraging a recurring-revenue model that’s beginning to accelerate. His advice for other founders reflects hard-earned experience: “Make sure you’re not a solution in search of a problem… and never fall in love with an idea.”
